The Village Museum was established in 1936 and it contains over 300 wooden
houses, windmills, churches etc. from
all over the country. outdoor museum, the largest in
Europe, covers some 30 acres on the shores of Lake Herastrau in Herestrau
Park.
Steep-roofed peasant homes,
thatched barns, log cabins, churches and watermills from all regions of
the country were carefully taken apart, shipped to the museum and rebuilt
in order to recreate the village setting. If you don't plan to visit
Romania's rural areas - and even if you do - you shouldn't miss this
museum which is one of the largest of its kind in Europe. Many of the
buildings are originals which were brought here in pieces and reassembled.
Spaces are designed more multiple uses and is no surprise since most homes
only have two rooms. There are Colorful special items, like dresses and
rugs, displayed on the walls of the house to personalize it and add
decoration. |

The oldest houses date as far
back as the 17C. Behind the project from the start was ethnographer
Dimitrie Gusti (1880 - 1955) who wanted the museum to mirror as closely as
possible the aspects of the rural life. Because of this the museum is
organized as a real village, with clusters of houses being linked by
winding paths. Throughout the year, the Village
Museum hosts special events where you will have a chance to witness folk
artisans demonstrating traditional skills in weaving, pottery and other
crafts. Folk arts and crafts are available at the museum gift shop.
Original and fascinating the Bucharest Village Museum is one
of the most visited museums. |
